One man’s journey toward aseptic technique

A proud member of this industry for more than 45 years, I've spoken and written about best practices in animal husbandry many times but have never had the chance to put a personal face on how I
came to be a strong proponent of aseptic technique.
More than 30 years ago, before the expansion of aseptic technique into research animal housing, I was animal facility manager at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, PA, US. While there, I adhered closely and diligently to the industry-accepted husbandry procedures of the day, as did most of my colleagues, promoting safety and efficiency within the facility without disruption to longheld and traditionally practiced methodologies. But in the back of my mind, I knew there could be a better way, and the more I exposed myself to advances in the industry, the more I realized I could implement change.
